REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE ASUCI SENATE 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the President of the Senate no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The President of the Senate reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Senate session if the President of the Senate feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Amending the Elections code to allow students with sophomore standing to run for and assume Executive Office

Whereas, the Constitution of ASUCI states that among its purposes is “to provide a forum for the expression of the student views and interests”,

Whereas, the Constitution of ASUCI further states that among its purposes is “to represent and articulate our rights to a voice in campus governance; to enhance the quality of student life; to foster recognition of the rights of students in this university community;”

 

Whereas, there exists a necessity for the positions of executive officer to be filled by experienced candidates while also allowing students to so choose which candidates they believe best represent them,

 

Whereas, one of the foundations of democratic governance is the right to participate in the elections process and

 

Whereas, students with sophomore standing may already have experience with the structure of the University of California; The University of California, Irvine; and The Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine, and

 

Whereas, The Constitution of ASUCI, Article 3, Section 1, subsection (b) states “(b) All UCI undergraduate students have the right to run for elected office in ASUCI.”, generally setting the precedent of open election access,

 

Therefore, let it be it resolved that Article XIII, Section B, of the Code of Elections of the Associated Students of the University of California, be amended so as to strike out “Junior” and insert “Sophomore”.
